What Is a Behaviour Plan? (And When Your Child Needs One)

BSPs explained: what's required, what's optional, and what's nonsense.

6 min read

A Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) is a written plan to prevent and respond to challenging behaviour. A real BSP is proactive — it identifies what triggers behaviour and changes the environment first. A weak BSP is a list of consequences.

What a real BSP includes

  • A function statement (what the behaviour communicates)
  • Antecedent strategies (what to change before)
  • Teaching strategies (what to teach instead)
  • Response strategies (what staff do in the moment)
  • Data collection and review schedule
