How to Prepare for an IPRC Meeting in Ontario

What to expect, what to bring, and how to leave with what your child needs.

8 min read

The IPRC is the Ontario committee that decides whether your child is formally identified as exceptional and where they are placed. The meeting itself is short — typically 20 to 30 minutes — but the impact lasts for years.

Before the meeting

  • Request all documents the IPRC will rely on, in advance
  • Bring private assessments and outside reports
  • Write down the identification(s) you believe apply
  • Decide on your placement preference (regular class with supports, special education class, etc.)

At the meeting

You can bring a support person or advocate. You can ask questions. You can ask for the meeting to be paused. You can also disagree with the decision in writing — and you have 30 days to appeal.
