How to Document School Concerns the Right Way

Templates and habits that protect your child and create a paper trail.

6 min read

If it is not in writing, it did not happen. The single biggest predictor of advocacy success is a parent who can produce a clean, dated paper trail.

What to document

  • Every meeting (date, attendees, decisions, next steps)
  • Every incident (date, time, what happened, school's response)
  • Every accommodation request (and who responded)
  • Every report and assessment received

How

Send a same-day email after every meeting summarizing what was discussed and decided. Cc the principal. Save copies. Use a single folder per school year.
